Self-awareness for self-development

How well do you know you?Do you keep your own attitude, characters and behaviour in check regularly? Are you open to constructive feedback from people around you?Or do you always rationalise away the feedback given to you with your self-defense mechanism? Will you be open to change, adjust or improve who you are and what you do for better results in your life?In my job as a HR and People Development manager, I have met many people who said something like “This is who I am. I just want to be myself.” or “I am just being an honest/direct person.” When something goes wrong, these people tend to think it is so because someone or something else causes it and they have little control over situations around them.If we want our lives to be better, we need to think better, communicate with other people better, behave better and we will even need become a better person with better mindset to attract/create the life we want to live in.Why do you need to care about personal development? What you give out to the world is what you get.
Your life can only get better when you become better. My interview and coaching question often includes “What’s your personal development goals?” Sadly, many people don’t even know what personal development really means and their goals are usually to make more money, to go on holidays and to be financially free so they don’t have to work again, retire soon and live a comfortable life.If you know what you want in life and choose to do what you love, or love what you do, you will feel like you want to work forever and money is just an exchange for the values you bring to the company/your clients.Work/business should make our lives’ more meaningful. purposeful and not miserable. In order to do our job/ business better , we need to become better too, to make better decisions, and take better action. Then, what do we need to become a better person? It starts with self-awareness. Be observant about who you are and what you do and how others perceive you and how they react/response to the way you communicate with them and they way you make them feel.Start setting some personal development goals, find a role model, learn from positive attributes of people you admire, educate yourself on personal development as well as professional development. When you are willing to change for the better, your life will change for the better too. Everyone of us deserve to live the life we dream of, by being a person who is worthy of success.Author: Natalie Guo, WisePolyglot
